Best Payroll Software in Tanzania (2026)

NSSF, PAYE, NHIF, SDL, WCF — what every Tanzanian payroll system must compute, and which platforms actually deliver.

The five things Tanzanian payroll must get right

If you run payroll in Tanzania, five statutory engines have to interlock correctly every month:

  1. NSSF. 10% employee + 10% employer up to a ceiling. Filed monthly; late filings draw penalty.
  2. PAYE. Graduated bands (0%, 8%, 20%, 25%, 30%). Computed on gross less NSSF. Filed monthly with TRA.
  3. NHIF. 3% of gross, capped TZS 7,500 per side, split 50/50 employee/employer.
  4. SDL. 4% of gross emoluments. Active only with 10+ employees. Filed monthly.
  5. WCF. Workers Compensation Fund. Industry-specific rate (0.6%–1.0% typically). Filed monthly.

Get any one of these wrong by a month and the penalties + interest start eating your margin. Get one wrong for a year and the cumulative back-pay is real money.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Best Payroll Software in Tanzania (2026) — NSSF, PAYE, NHIF, SDL, WCF.

What statutory deductions does Tanzanian payroll need to compute?
NSSF (10% employee, 10% employer up to ceiling), PAYE (graduated bands), NHIF (3% capped at TZS 7,500), SDL (4% above 10 employees), and WCF (industry-specific). All five must be computed monthly, all five must be filed with their respective authorities, and all five interlock with each other.
What are the 2026 PAYE bands in Tanzania?
Approximately: 0% on the first TZS 270,000/month; 8% on the next TZS 250,000; 20% on the next; 25% on the next; 30% above TZS 1,020,000. Verify current rates on the TRA website each fiscal year — Tawala auto-updates when TRA publishes new bands.
Is SDL mandatory and at what threshold?
SDL (Skills Development Levy) is 4% of gross emoluments, payable by employers with 10 or more employees. It funds vocational training. Tawala automatically activates SDL the month your headcount crosses the threshold.
How does NHIF work for private-sector employees?
NHIF is 3% of gross salary, split equally between employee and employer, capped at TZS 7,500 per side. Tawala calculates it per pay cycle and emits the NHIF return file in the format the fund accepts.
Can payroll software pay staff via M-Pesa B2C?
Yes. Tawala generates an M-Pesa B2C bulk-pay file each pay cycle. NMB / CRDB / NBC / Stanbic bulk-pay file formats are also supported. One pay run; one click; the whole team paid.
How do I handle seasonal / casual workers?
Tawala supports day-rate, hourly, piece-rate, and salaried compensation models in the same payroll. NSSF and PAYE compute correctly regardless of model. WCF rates differ by industry classification.
What about employees on Wakala / commission?
Tawala's Wakala Management module produces a per-sub-agent commission split each month, and that flows directly into payroll if the sub-agent is on PAYE. If they're a contractor, withholding tax is computed instead.
How does Tawala compare to Bravo, Sage, or running payroll in Excel?
Bravo and Sage handle the maths but require manual NSSF / PAYE / NHIF return formatting and bank-file generation. Excel is acceptable up to ~5 employees; beyond that, the error rate kills you. Tawala ships all five statutory returns and all four bank-file formats out of the box.
