Best POS Software in Tanzania for 2026 — Top 10 Reviewed
From single shops to multi-branch chains: an honest comparison of the top POS options for Tanzanian retail, restaurants, and pharmacies.
- Single shop or chain in Tanzania, full TRA VFD + M-Pesa native: Tawala POS
- Tanzania-specific competitors with track record: Tanzabiz, VumaCloud
- Restaurant-specific: Tawala POS or Lightspeed (USD)
- Pharmacy-specific (TFDA-aware): Tawala (Pharmacy module)
- Hardware EFD machines (legacy): avoid — VFD software is now standard
What "POS for Tanzania" actually means
A POS system in Tanzania has to do five things that international POS systems often skip:
- Issue TRA-compliant fiscal receipts in real time (VFD).
- Accept M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, and Airtel Money at the till.
- Print receipts to a thermal printer with QR code and TRA receipt number.
- Run offline when the internet drops, queue receipts, and re-sync when online.
- Generate Z-reports daily (TRA-mandatory).
Almost any POS can take a card payment. Few can do all five Tanzanian-specific items.
1. Tawala POS — best overall for Tanzania
Strengths: Full TRA VFD certified. M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money built in. Offline mode with auto-sync. Auto Z-reports. Multi-branch dashboards. Hardware-agnostic (any tablet, laptop, USB or Bluetooth printer). Plans from TZS 75,000/month including all of this.
Best for: Single shops to 50-branch chains. Retail, restaurants (with F&B mode), pharmacies (with TFDA module), salons, workshops. See Tawala POS →
2. Tanzabiz POS
Tanzania-built, mature in Dar es Salaam retailers. Solid for accounting integration. Mobile-money depth varies. Custom pricing.
3. VumaCloud POS
Cloud-native Tanzania POS. Decent feature set. Customer base is smaller — ask for references in your sector.
4. Hardware EFD machines (legacy)
The old approach: a dedicated EFD machine for TRA, plus separate POS software. Cost TZS 800,000–1,200,000 per machine. Slow, breaks, doesn't integrate. VFD software (option 1–3 above) has now replaced these for most use cases.
5. Square POS
Beautiful UX, polished hardware, but: not TRA VFD certified, doesn't accept M-Pesa, USD pricing. Not realistic for Tanzanian compliance.
6. Loyverse
Free-tier POS, decent for very small retailers. No TRA VFD, no M-Pesa. Could supplement an EFD machine but doesn't replace it.
7. Lightspeed Retail
Strong for boutique retail and restaurants in developed markets. USD pricing, no Tanzanian compliance. Use only if you have parallel local compliance handled.
8. Toast (restaurants)
The dominant US restaurant POS — not available in Tanzania.
9. Zettle (PayPal)
Mobile POS for tap-to-pay. No M-Pesa. Limited TZ market.
10. Excel + manual receipts (the default)
What many small Tanzanian shops still use: paper receipts, Excel for daily totals. It "works" but every audit day is panic day.
