TIN & VRN Registration in Tanzania — Step by Step
Every Tanzanian business needs a TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number). Businesses with annual turnover above TZS 200M also need a VRN (VAT Registration Number). Here's the exact process for both in 2026.
TIN application
Visit your nearest TRA office or apply online via TRA's portal. Bring: business registration certificate (BRELA), director ID, proof of business address. Processing typically 1–3 business days. The TIN is required before opening a business bank account.
VRN application
Apply at TRA when annual turnover exceeds TZS 200M (or voluntarily, if you want to reclaim input VAT). VRN allows you to charge 18% VAT on sales and reclaim VAT on purchases. Required before issuing TRA-compliant fiscal receipts to other VAT-registered customers.
After registration
Once you have TIN and VRN, apply for TRA VFD certificate to start issuing fiscal receipts. Read our VFD setup guide →
