How to calculate a TZS loan
Tanzania loan calculator — TZS, banks & MFIs
Whether you're borrowing from CRDB, NMB, NBC, Equity, Stanbic, Exim or a SACCO/MFI, the way the lender quotes interest dramatically changes what you actually repay. Banks normally use reducing balance (interest charged only on the outstanding principal). Many SACCOs and microfinance lenders quote a flat / fixed rate (interest on original principal) — the same nominal % is materially more expensive.
Reducing balance vs flat — same 17% looks like this
On a TZS 10M loan over 24 months at 17%:
- Reducing — total interest ≈ TZS 1.85M, APR 9.2%.
- Flat — total interest = TZS 3.40M, APR 17%.
Almost double the interest cost — even though the headline rate is the same. Always ask for the APR in writing and compare.
Tanzanian lending checklist
- Confirm whether the rate is reducing or flat in writing.

- Check early-settlement penalties (typically 1–3% of outstanding).
- Calculate your debt service ratio (DSR ≤ 40% of net income).
- Get a formal loan offer letter — required by BoT regulations.
