Don't pay more to cash out than you have to

Mobile-money withdrawal fees in Tanzania vary materially across the four major networks — M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money and Halopesa — and the difference at any given amount can be 10–30%. This comparator pulls the latest published tariff bands and ranks them so you can pick the cheapest network for your specific amount.

How tariff bands work

Each operator publishes a stepped tariff rather than a flat percentage. Crossing a band threshold (often 5k, 10k, 30k, 100k) jumps the fee — sometimes withdrawing TZS 30,001 costs more than withdrawing TZS 30,000 by quite a margin. Worth checking before you dial.

Better: skip cash-out entirely

  • Pay merchants with Lipa Number / Pochi la Biashara / Tigo Pay / Airtel Pay — most are free.
  • Pay bills via mobile money — DAWASA, TANESCO, DSTV, council fees — often zero fee.
  • Use cash-back at supermarkets — top retailers do mini cash-out free against a purchase.

For business owners

If you're paying staff or agents, sending bulk via the operator's business portal is dramatically cheaper than individual P2P. Tawala's payroll module integrates with all four networks for batch disbursement at the lowest tier.
