The cash flow forecast — what every Tanzanian SMB should run monthly

"Profit is opinion; cash is fact." A 12-month cash flow forecast is the single most useful tool for any Tanzanian SMB to avoid the #1 cause of business failure: running out of cash. Profitable businesses still fail when timing of inflows and outflows is mismatched — a forecast surfaces that risk before it bites.

Three sections of every cash flow forecast

  • Inflows — sales (cash + credit collection), mobile money receipts, other income.
  • Outflows — salaries, rent, utilities, inventory, marketing, statutory taxes (PAYE/NSSF/NHIF/SDL/WCF), VAT remittance, loan repayments.
  • Balances — net cash flow per month + cumulative closing balance.

How to use it

  1. Fill the next 3 months in detail — these are your budget commitments.
  2. Estimate months 4–12 — quarterly review, refine.
  3. Watch closing balance — if it goes negative, plan financing now (overdraft, invoice discounting, bridging loan).
  4. Track variances — at month-end, replace estimates with actuals; understand the gaps.

Tanzania-specific tips

  • VAT cycles — VAT receipts and remittances don't match by 1 month; budget for the timing gap.
  • PAYE on the 7th — the largest fixed monthly outflow for most employers.
  • March 31 — business license renewal; budget by January.
  • Tourism seasonality — Jul–Oct + Dec peak; Apr–May trough. Forecast troughs realistically.
  • Government contracts — payment delays are common; budget 60–120 days payment terms.

Variance analysis is where the value is

The forecast itself is moderately useful. The monthly comparison of forecast vs actual is where decisions are made. If sales miss by 20% three months running, you act — cut a cost, push collections, raise capital. Without the forecast, you only see the cash crisis when the bank balance is already empty.
