Tanzania driving licence — fees by class

Tanzania driving licences are issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) after a driving test administered by the Tanzania Police Force (Traffic Department). The cost depends on class, validity, and whether you're applying new or renewing.

Licence classes

  • A — Motorcycle — boda boda riders. Min age 18.
  • B — Private vehicle — saloon, SUV, station wagon. Min age 18.
  • C1 — Light goods (≤ 3.5T) — small trucks, pickups for hire. Min age 21.
  • C — Heavy goods (> 3.5T) — lorries, tippers. Min age 25.
  • D1 — Mini-bus / daladala — public service. Min age 25.
  • D — Bus / coach — long-distance public service. Min age 28.
  • E — Trailer / articulated — must already hold C. Min age 25.

Where the cost comes from

  • Application fee: ~TZS 10,000 — TRA portal.
  • Driving test: ~TZS 40,000 — police testing centre, oral + practical.
  • Licence fee: TZS 40,000 (3 years) or 60,000 (5 years).
  • Card production: ~TZS 10,000 (replacement: 20,000).
  • Driving school: highly variable — TZS 50,000 (motorbike) to 500,000+ (heavy/PSV).

Process

  1. Register on the TRA portal and pay the application fee.
  2. Attend driving school (recommended — improves first-time pass rate).
  3. Sit the police driving test.
  4. Pay the licence fee, biometric capture at TRA.
  5. Collect the smart-card licence.

For renewal, only the application + licence + card fees apply (no test). For lost-card replacement, you'll need a police report.

Take this further
