Corporate income tax in Tanzania

Tanzanian companies pay corporate income tax at 30% of taxable profit. There are two important reliefs: companies newly listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange pay 25% for their first three years, and resident SMBs with annual turnover below TZS 100 million can opt for turnover tax at 3% instead of profit tax — which is simpler to compute and often cheaper.

How taxable profit is calculated

Taxable profit = revenue − allowable expenses − capital allowances. Capital allowances replace accounting depreciation: 5% straight-line on buildings, 25–37.5% reducing balance on plant, 50% straight-line on R&D. Tax losses can be carried forward indefinitely subject to the continuity-of-ownership test.

SMB turnover tax — should you opt in?

The 3% turnover tax is a simplified regime open to resident individuals and companies with turnover below TZS 100M. It replaces income tax and the obligation to keep formal accounts — useful if your accounting is informal but typically expensive once your margins exceed ~10%. Use the calculator to compare both methods at your numbers.

Filing & deadlines

  • Quarterly provisional tax — by the end of months 3, 6, 9 and 12.
  • Annual return — within 6 months of year-end (Form ITX-201).
  • Late filing: 5% penalty per month, plus interest at the statutory rate.

Pair this with the VAT Calculator, Withholding Tax and Full Payroll to model your full tax cost. Tawala automates the lot.
