How Tanzania sets fuel prices

EWURA — the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority — sets monthly cap prices for petrol, diesel and kerosene by region. The cap is the maximum legal pump price, and most stations sell at or just below it. EWURA publishes new caps every month. In its 2026 notices the new prices take effect at 00:01 on the first Wednesday of the month (for example Wednesday 7 January, 4 February and 7 October 2026), so check for a new notice in the first week of each month.

Why prices vary by region

The Dar es Salaam port is the import gateway — prices climb as you move inland to cover transport, with Kigoma and Mbeya typically the highest, Dar the lowest.

What drives the monthly change

• International oil prices — the world price of refined petrol, diesel and kerosene.
• USD/TZS exchange rate — fuel is imported in USD.
• Road tolls, levies and excise — broadly stable but can change in budget.
• Strategic stock and pipeline tariffs.

Fuel price in Tanzania today: how to check the current cap

1. On any phone, dial *152*00# and follow the menu — EWURA's free cap-price service, available on all networks.
2. Open EWURA's petroleum price publications at ewura.go.tz.
3. Open the latest public notice on cap prices. Its title gives the date the caps take effect.
4. Find your town. The notice sets cap prices for petrol, diesel and kerosene for towns across Tanzania Mainland.
5. Compare it with the table above, which shows the caps we last loaded and the month they apply to. If EWURA's notice is newer, its figures apply.

Petrol and diesel prices in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and upcountry

Dar es Salaam usually has some of the lowest caps, because fuel is landed at the port there. Inland towns such as Arusha, Dodoma, Mbeya and Kigoma pay more, because their caps include the cost of moving fuel from the port. Within a town, stations may sell below the cap, so the cap is the most you should pay, not necessarily what you will pay.

EWURA's caps apply to Tanzania Mainland. Zanzibar's fuel prices are set separately by its own regulator, so check there if you buy fuel on Unguja or Pemba.

Planning a fuel budget

For a fleet, generator or delivery budget, multiply your monthly litres by the cap for your town and re-run the sum each month when the new caps come out. The cap moves with world oil prices and the shilling–dollar exchange rate, so budget a buffer rather than assuming this month's price will hold.

How to read the tracker

Each row of the table above is a region, with the cap per litre in TZS for petrol, diesel and kerosene. The line above the table shows the month the caps were loaded. All figures are maximum prices: a station charging more than the cap for its town is breaking EWURA's price rules, while one charging less is allowed.

For fleet operators

The EWURA cap is a ceiling: stations and bulk suppliers may sell below it (though not below EWURA's floor price under the Petroleum Products Price Setting Rules), so volume buyers can ask for a price under the cap and for credit terms.
