How Tanzania sets fuel prices
EWURA — the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority — sets monthly cap prices for petrol, diesel and kerosene by region. The cap is the maximum legal pump price, and most stations sell at or just below it. Caps are revised on the 4th of every month with new prices effective from the 5th.
Why prices vary by region
The Dar es Salaam port is the import gateway — prices climb as you move inland to cover transport, with Kigoma and Mbeya typically the highest, Dar the lowest.
What drives the monthly change
- International oil prices (Mediterranean refined product benchmarks).
- USD/TZS exchange rate — fuel is imported in USD.
- Road tolls, levies and excise — broadly stable but can change in budget.
- Strategic stock and pipeline tariffs.
