How annual leave works in Tanzania
The Employment & Labour Relations Act, Cap. 366 entitles every employee to 28 consecutive days of paid leave per leave cycle of 12 months — equivalent to about 21 working days. Public holidays falling within the leave period extend the leave by the same number of days.
Accrual & carry-over
- Pro-rata accrual: ~1.75 working days per completed month.
- Up to half the entitlement may be carried into the next cycle by mutual agreement.
- On termination, accrued but untaken leave must be paid out.
Other leave types
- Sick leave — 126 days per cycle: first 63 at full pay, next 63 at half pay.
- Maternity leave — 84 days, paid at full salary, every 3 years.
- Paternity leave — 3 paid days within 7 days of birth.
- Compassionate leave — 4 paid days per leave cycle.
