Reverse PAYE — gross from take-home

If you've negotiated a take-home offer and now need to put the right gross on the contract, this is the tool. It runs the PAYE calculation in reverse — bisecting until the resulting net matches your target — and shows the full breakdown including NSSF and NHIF.

Why offers in Tanzania are often quoted in net

For middle-skill roles, candidates think in net (the figure that actually hits their bank). Recruiters quote net to win the conversation. But Tanzanian labour law requires the contract to state gross, and the payroll system charges PAYE on gross — so HR has to back-solve.

Quick rule of thumb

  • Net up to TZS 270k — gross ≈ net ÷ 0.87 (NSSF + NHIF only).
  • Net 270k–520k — add ~9% on top.
  • Net 520k–760k — add ~20%.
  • Net 760k–1M — add ~25%.
  • Net above 1M — every extra net shilling costs ~1.45 gross shillings.

Pair with the Full Payroll Calculator to see total employer cost, the PAYE Calculator to verify, and the Payslip Generator to issue the offer letter pack.

Take this further

Offering a net salary is common in Tanzania and expensive to get wrong, because the employer absorbs every change in the bands. Tawala Payroll holds net-pay agreements as a contract type and re-derives the gross automatically whenever rates change.

Frequently asked questions

What is reverse PAYE?
Computing the gross salary required to deliver a target net take-home, after PAYE, NSSF and NHIF.
Why do offers usually quote gross?
Tanzanian labour law requires the contract to state gross. Net-to-gross is most useful when negotiating offers around take-home.
Does the calculator include allowances?
It treats the gross as the cash component subject to PAYE; non-taxable allowances should be added separately.
What about expat tax?
Non-residents are taxed at 30% flat — the calculator has a non-resident toggle.
Can I use this for contract employees?
Contractors generally fall under withholding tax, not PAYE — use the Withholding Tax Calculator instead.
