Per the most recent Wage Board Order. Always confirm against the latest gazette.

How to find the right minimum wage

1
Identify the sector: agriculture, mining, transport, hospitality, security, domestic, etc.
2
Look up the gazetted minimum.
3
Apply pro-rata for part-time staff.
4
Update contracts and payroll annually after each gazette.

Tanzania has 14 sector minimum wages — not one

Unlike many countries, Tanzania does not set a single national minimum wage. Instead, the Wage Board issues sector-specific minima covering 14 categories — from agriculture and domestic work at the bottom to mining and private health at the top. This tool reflects the most recent gazette (2024–2026 cycle) and converts the monthly minimum into hourly and annual equivalents.

Key rules every employer should know

  • Pro-rata for part-time — the hourly equivalent must not fall below the sector minimum.
  • Casuals included — agriculture-sector minima cover casual farm labour.
  • Allowances on top — minimum wage is the floor for basic; statutory leave, overtime and weekend premiums apply on top.
  • Zanzibar separate — Zanzibar sets its own scale; this tool covers Mainland.

Penalty for underpayment

An employee paid below the minimum can claim back-pay plus damages, and the labour officer can prosecute. Settling later is always more expensive than getting the contract right at the start.

Combine with the Leave Calculator to size annual entitlement, the Payslip Generator for compliant pay statements, and the Full Payroll Calculator for total employer cost.
