Tanzania BMI Calculator (Healthy Weight)

Free BMI calculator — body mass index from your weight and height. Tanzania healthy-weight guidance.

What BMI tells you (and what it doesn't)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening number — your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres. The WHO classification applies the same way in Tanzania as anywhere else: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is healthy, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese. It's a useful first check, but it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat — athletes often score "overweight" without being unhealthy.

Why BMI matters in Tanzania

Tanzania has a fast-rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) — diabetes, hypertension, heart disease — driven by changing diet and reduced physical activity in urban areas. Knowing your BMI is the single cheapest health check you can do, and it predicts NCD risk well at the population level.

Healthy weight by height

  • 1.50 m: 41.6 – 56.0 kg
  • 1.60 m: 47.4 – 63.7 kg
  • 1.70 m: 53.5 – 71.9 kg
  • 1.80 m: 59.9 – 80.5 kg
  • 1.90 m: 66.7 – 89.6 kg

If your BMI is high — what to do

  1. Reduce sugar-sweetened drinks (soda, juice) — the single biggest TZ-urban driver.
  2. Walk or cycle 30 minutes daily — easy in most TZ cities.
  3. Cook with less oil; eat more vegetables, beans, legumes.
  4. See a clinician if BMI > 30, especially with hypertension or family history of diabetes.

NHIF covers consultation and chronic-disease management at accredited facilities — see the NHIF Calculator.
