Tanzania passports & visas — at a glance

The Department of Immigration Services (immigration.go.tz) issues passports for Tanzanian citizens and visas for foreigners. Most applications now go through the e-immigration portal, with biometric capture at an immigration office.

Passport types

  • Ordinary 32-page (5 years) — TZS 100,000. Standard for most citizens.
  • Ordinary 48-page (10 years) — TZS 150,000. Best value for frequent travellers.
  • Diplomatic — TZS 250,000. Government use only.
  • Child (under 16) — TZS 50,000, valid 5 years. Photo + birth certificate required.

Visa types for foreigners

  • Single-entry tourist visa — USD 50 (≈ TZS 130,000). 3 months.
  • Multiple-entry — USD 100 (≈ TZS 260,000). 6 or 12 months.
  • EAC tourist visa — covers Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda for 90 days.
  • e-Visa — apply at eservices.immigration.go.tz; receive PDF authorisation.
  • Work permit Class A/B/C — TZS 5.5–8M annually depending on classification.

Useful tips

  1. Apply for renewal at least 6 months before expiry — many countries require 6 months validity.
  2. Use the 10-year passport if you travel often — same forms, only 50% extra fee.
  3. For lost passport, get a police report first, then apply for replacement.
  4. Express service (3-day) is available at TZS 250,000 premium.
