Tanzania visa policy by nationality
Tanzania's visa regime falls into five categories:
- Visa-free — EAC partner states (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan) plus selected SADC and Commonwealth nationals.
- Visa-on-arrival — most Western nations; pay USD 50 (single) or 100 (multiple) at the airport or land border.
- e-Visa — apply online at eservices.immigration.go.tz. Receive PDF before travel. Same fees as visa-on-arrival.
- Referral visa — listed nations require pre-approval from the Immigration Department in Dar before issuance.
- Embassy / consulate visa — selected nations must apply at a Tanzanian embassy abroad.
Tips for travellers
- Apply for an e-Visa 2–3 weeks before travel — avoid airport queues and delays.
- EAC tourist visa (USD 100) — covers TZ + KE + UG for 90 days; cheaper if you visit two or more.
- Yellow Fever certificate required if entering from a country with risk of YF transmission.
- Passport validity — 6 months beyond intended stay required.
- Two blank pages required in passport.
Visa extension
The standard tourist visa is 90 days. Extension to 180 days is possible at the Immigration HQ in Dar es Salaam — apply before expiry to avoid overstay penalties of TZS 100,000 per day.
