NIDA card — replacing a lost or damaged ID

The National Identification Authority (NIDA) issues the Tanzanian national ID card (kitambulisho cha taifa). First-time issuance is free; replacement of a lost, damaged or out-of-date card costs about TZS 20,000 plus supporting documents.

The 4 replacement scenarios

  • Lost — needs a police report, an affidavit, and a letter from your mtaa/kitongoji.
  • Damaged — bring the damaged card, no police report needed.
  • Name change — needs marriage certificate or deed poll.
  • Data correction — needs an affidavit and supporting documents (birth certificate showing correct data).

Process

  1. Get any required preliminary documents (police report, affidavit, mtaa letter).
  2. Visit a NIDA office with all documents and two passport-size photos.
  3. Biometric verification (fingerprints, photo).
  4. Pay the fee at an authorised bank or via the TRA control number generated.
  5. Collect the new card after 2–6 weeks.
