Tanzania safari pricing — what you actually pay

A Tanzania safari typically prices in USD per person per day. Major operators (Asilia, AndBeyond, Thomson, Wayo, local Tanzanian DMCs) bundle accommodation, vehicle, driver-guide, all meals, park fees and daily transfers into one daily rate. The variation is overwhelmingly driven by lodge tier, not by the number of parks.

The four tiers

  • Budget (camping) — USD 150–250/person/day. Public campsites, basic tents, basic 4×4. Shoestring safari.
  • Mid-range (lodges) — USD 350–550/person/day. Branded lodges (Serena, Sopa, Tloma, Kibo). The sweet spot for most international visitors.
  • Premium (luxury) — USD 700–1,200/person/day. Asilia, AndBeyond, Singita's lower tiers; private vehicle, fast-track airport.
  • Ultra-luxury — USD 1,500–3,000+/person/day. Singita, Legendary Expeditions, balloon safaris, private fly-camps, private chef.

What's included in the daily rate

  • Accommodation + all meals.
  • 4×4 vehicle + driver-guide.
  • Park entry fees (varies by park — see TANAPA Park Fees).
  • Daily game drives.
  • Bottled water in the vehicle.

What's NOT included (budget for these)

  • International flights — to JRO (Kilimanjaro Airport) or DAR.
  • Visa — see Visa by Nationality.
  • Tips — USD 25–40/day for the guide; ~USD 10/day per staff member at lodges.
  • Premium drinks, spa, optional balloon (USD 600+).
  • Travel insurance (mandatory for many operators).

When to go

  • Jan–Mar: Calving season in southern Serengeti — cheap, dramatic.
  • Jun–Oct: Peak dry season — best wildlife visibility, Mara crossing in Aug-Sep, premium prices.
  • Nov–Dec: Short rains — green, lower prices, photography-friendly.
