How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is regulated by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) — every climber must go through a licensed operator, with a guide and the right team of porters/cooks. The total cost ranges from USD 1,500 (budget, 5-day Marangu) to USD 8,000+ (premium 9-day Northern Circuit).

What you're paying for

  • TANAPA park fee: ~USD 70/day per climber.
  • Camping fee or hut fee: ~USD 60/day.

  • Crew wages (porters, guide, cook): ~USD 200–300/day for the team.
  • Equipment (tents, sleeping bags, mess gear).
  • Food + water purification.
  • Operator margin + airport transfers + briefing accommodation.
  • VAT 18% on the package.

Routes — strengths & costs

  • Marangu (5–6 days) — only route with hut accommodation. Cheapest. ~70% summit success.
  • Machame (6–7 days) — most popular; great scenery; ~85% success.
  • Lemosho (7–8 days) — quieter, longer acclimatisation; ~90% success.
  • Rongai (6–7 days) — northern approach; drier, less crowded.
  • Northern Circuit (9 days) — best success rate (~95%) but highest cost.
  • Umbwe (6 days) — short, steep, expert only — high failure rate.
