Instruments and their duty

  • Conveyance of land or shares — 1% on the price (or market value if higher).
  • Lease — 1% on the average annual rent multiplied by the lease term in years.
  • Mortgage / debenture — 1% on the secured amount.
  • Contract — 1% on the consideration (services, supply, joint-venture).
  • Power of attorney — TZS 5,000 fixed.
  • Affidavit — TZS 1,500 fixed.

Deadlines and penalties

Stamp duty must be paid within 30 days of execution. Late payment attracts a 25% penalty per quarter of delay, capped at the value of the duty. An unstamped instrument cannot be admitted as evidence in a Tanzanian court.

  2. Generate a TRA control number on the e-stamp portal.
