TANESCO Electricity Bill Estimator

Estimate your TANESCO electricity bill in Tanzania. EWURA-approved D1, T1, T2, T3 tariffs + service charge + VAT.

Find this on your last TANESCO bill or LUKU receipts.

How TANESCO bills you

TANESCO charges electricity in Tanzania on tariffs set by EWURA (the regulator). Each tariff has an energy charge per kWh + a fixed service charge + on-top levies (VAT 18%, EWURA Levy 1%, Rural Electrification Agency 3%). The structure is the same whether you pay post-paid or via LUKU prepaid tokens.

Tariff categories

  • D1 — Domestic Low Use: First 75 kWh at TZS 100/kWh — the most subsidised tariff. After 75 kWh, T1 rates apply.
  • T1 — General Use: Domestic households and small businesses on Low Voltage. ~TZS 292/kWh + service charge.
  • T2 — LV Commercial & Industrial: ~TZS 205/kWh + service charge.
  • T3-MV / T3-HV: Medium and High Voltage industrial — lower rates per kWh but higher service charges and demand charges (kVA).

How to cut your TANESCO bill

  1. Stay on D1 below 75 kWh — possible only if you skip the fridge or have very efficient appliances.
  2. LED bulbs — cut lighting consumption by 80% vs incandescent.
  3. Solar water heating — water heating is the #2 cost in most homes.
  4. Switch off "vampire" devices — TVs, decoders, chargers on standby.
  5. Solar PV — 1.5 kW rooftop systems pay back in 4–6 years at current tariffs.

What's in the "extra charges"?

  • VAT 18% — added to subtotal.
  • EWURA Levy 1% — funds the regulator.
  • REA 3% — Rural Electrification Agency surcharge to extend the grid.
